Fayetteville NC Mesh

This website is dedicated to helping people in the fayetteville nc area to connect and coordinate when using meshtastic deviecves to form a local mesh.

What is meshtastic?

Meshtastic is an open-source, off-grid communication system that uses small, low-power radios to create a private wireless network. It lets people send text messages, GPS locations, and sensor data without cell service or internet — perfect for local communities, outdoor adventures, and emergency communication.

Getting Started with Meshtastic

Meshtastic is an open-source project that lets you send messages and share location data without cell service, Wi-Fi, or the internet — just small radios creating their own private network

1. Get the Hardware

You’ll need at least two Meshtastic-compatible radios to start. Popular options include:

  • Heltec V3 / V4 or TTGO T-Beam (built-in GPS & battery support)
  • RAK or LilyGO boards for custom setups
  • Each device acts as a node in the network, passing messages between users.

2. Install the App

Download the Meshtastic app for your phone or desktop:

  • Android – available on Google Play
  • Windows/Mac/Linux – via Meshtastic.org

The app connects to your radio by USB or Bluetooth to configure settings and send messages.

3. Flash the Firmware

Use the Meshtastic Web Flasher at flasher.meshtastic.org to install the latest firmware on your device.
This ensures you have the newest features and security updates.

4. Configure Your Node

  1. Open the app or web interface to set:
  2. Device name
  3. Region/Frequency (for example, 915 MHz in the U.S.)
  4. Channel name and encryption key
  5. GPS and LoRa settings
  6. Once saved, your node will automatically connect with nearby nodes on the same channel.

5. Start Communicating

Now you can:

  • Send text messages between devices
  • See GPS locations on a map
  • Share sensors or telemetry data
  • Help extend the network by keeping your node powered on
